Patient FAQS

What does myopia control mean?

○ Because myopia progressively increases as the eye continues to grow in length, the goal in myopia control is to delay how quickly this occurs. This ultimately diminishes the risks of subsequent sight-threatening ocular pathology. Itropine is used for myopia control.

● Is Itropine a prescription eye drop?

○ Yes. Itropine requires an evaluation by an eye care physician who would provide the prescription drops and manage treatment.

Can I use Itropine instead of my current myopia control method?

○ Yes, it is a possible option based on your eye care physician’s assessment of current myopia management efficacy. In some instances Itropine can be an additive therapy.

● Are Itropine drops effective?

○ Yes, Itropine effectively slows myopia progression by 30-50%. It is even more effective the second year of treatment.

● Is my youngest child a candidate for Itropine treatment?

○ Children as young as 4 years old were included in our clinical studies. Itropine is also a great option for those who may not be good candidates for other myopia treatment therapies.

● Does Itropine have side effects?

○ Itropine is reliable and has a low risk profile. Therefore, side effects are very minimal and negligible.

● Does Itropine eliminate the need for glasses or contacts?

○ Vision correction is still required with Itropine treatment. Everyday glasses or contacts are to be used simultaneously for vision correction. It is advisable to instill Itropine 5-10 minutes prior to inserting contacts.
